Santa Barbara County, California – A wrong-way Santa Barbara Country crash on Highway 101 early Sunday morning left one person dead and two others seriously injured, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The accident occurred near Betteravia Road in Santa Maria following reports of a wrong-way driver.
CHP officers responded to reports of a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 near Los Alamos around 5:15 a.m.
Approximately 15 minutes later, the wrong-way vehicle collided head-on with a southbound pickup truck on the highway. The driver of the pickup truck sustained serious injuries, while the passenger tragically died at the scene.
The driver of the wrong-way car also suffered severe injuries and has since been arrested in connection with the fatal collision. Authorities have not yet released further details about the driver or the exact charges filed.
Following this Highway 101 accident, the southbound lanes were closed for several hours as investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash. The highway reopened in the afternoon.
