Irvine, CA – October 28, 2025 | Ayuda California News
A Los Angeles man was killed Monday morning in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 (I-5) near Sand Canyon Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The collision occurred around 8:30 a.m. when the driver of an Infiniti traveling at high speed approached an area of stopped traffic and crashed into a Jeep in the fast lane. The impact pushed the Jeep forward into a Mazda SUV.

The driver of the Infiniti was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified as Irving José Orozco Gómez, 26, of Los Angeles, according to Sgt. Gerard McCann of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash caused lane closures and heavy traffic congestion in both directions for several hours as authorities cleared the scene.

High Rate of Fatal Crashes in Orange County

According to data from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Orange County has one of the highest rates of highway crashes in the state, with an 18% increase in fatal collisions between 2022 and 2024.

The main contributing factors include:
🚨 Speeding – present in 32% of all fatal crashes.
📱 Distracted driving, including phone use and GPS navigation.
🍺 Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs – in nearly 1 out of every 4 fatal cases.

In areas like Irvine, Santa Ana, and Anaheim, sections of the I-5 and SR-55 are considered high-risk corridors, especially during morning rush hours. Authorities urge drivers to maintain a safe following distance and avoid distractions, as even a few seconds of inattention can have fatal consequences.

Legal Rights for Families and Victims

While the investigation is ongoing, California law allows families to seek wrongful death or personal injury compensation under the Code of Civil Procedure §§377.60–377.61.

Eligible damages may include:
⚰️ Funeral and emergency medical expenses
💼 Loss of income and financial support
❤️ Emotional suffering and loss of companionship
🏠 Property damage to vehicles or personal belongings

If gross negligence or reckless driving is proven, families may also pursue punitive damages under Civil Code §3294.

Depending on their policies, Jeep and Mazda owners may also file personal injury claims and seek recovery through uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM) or MedPay benefits.
