Two people were killed Thursday night following a violent crash between a car and a cargo truck (big rig) on Highway 99 in Madera County, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

What We Know About the Crash

The crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 99, just south of Avenue 11.

According to CHP:

  • A Honda Civic made a sudden maneuver near a cargo truck.
  • For reasons still under investigation, the Honda’s driver lost control and entered the truck’s lane.
  • The big-rig driver braked immediately, but did not have enough time to avoid the collision, striking the passenger vehicle on its side.

The two occupants of the Honda Civic, a male driver and a female passenger, both approximately in their 30s, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities stated there is no indication that alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

The collision caused several hours of traffic congestion while investigators conducted the crash investigation and crews cleared the roadway.

Ongoing Investigation

CHP continues to analyze the precise cause of the crash, including:

  • Traffic conditions
  • Possible mechanical issues
  • Evasive maneuvers
  • Vehicle speed and following distance

At this time, no charges have been announced.

Legal Rights of the Victims’ Families

Even while the investigation remains open, the families of those killed have important rights under California law.

Potential Commercial Liability

In crashes involving cargo trucks, investigators may also evaluate:
