Long Beach, CA – February 21, 2026 | Ayuda California News
Four people were killed early Saturday morning in a fatal crash in Long Beach, near Long Beach Airport, according to local authorities.
The crash occurred around 1:18 a.m. in the area of Lakewood Boulevard and Spring Street, when a gray sedan struck the center divider inside a tunnel beneath an airport runway.
Images from the scene show the vehicle completely engulfed in flames following the impact.
All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
What Is Being Investigated?
Long Beach Police are investigating whether excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash.
Due to the severity of the incident and its proximity to airport infrastructure, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the federal agency that investigates major transportation accidents announced it will send a team to assist in the investigation.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.
Legal Perspective: What Happens in a Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash?
Although this was a single-vehicle crash, that does not automatically mean there is no additional legal responsibility.
In cases like this, investigators may examine factors such as:
- Unsafe speed (CVC § 22350)
- Roadway design or signage conditions
- Possible mechanical defects in the vehicle
- Structural failures in guardrails or barriers
- Third-party liability (if another vehicle indirectly contributed)
If negligence by a third party or public entity is established, surviving family members may have the right to file a wrongful death claim under California Code of Civil Procedure §§ 377.60–377.61.
In cases involving potential government liability (such as dangerous roadway design), strict deadlines apply under the California Government Claims Act.
Potential Rights of the Families
Depending on the official findings, families may be entitled to seek compensation for:
✔️ Funeral expenses
✔️ Loss of income and financial support
✔️ Loss of companionship
✔️ Compensation for pain and suffering prior to death (survival action – CPC § 377.30)
Each case requires a technical analysis of expert reports, collision findings, and accident reconstruction.
