DUI Crash in San José Leaves Passenger Seriously Injured

A driver suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI) was arrested after causing a violent DUI crash in San José that split her vehicle in half and left a passenger seriously injured, according to authorities from the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred on the night of February 28 at around 8:00 p.m. on the southbound lanes of Interstate 280, just south of Winchester Boulevard in San José.
What Happened in the Crash
According to a preliminary CHP report:
- The driver lost control of a 2012 Ford Fusion.
- The vehicle crashed directly into a tree.
- The force of the impact split the car into two sections.
Images released by authorities show the front and rear portions of the vehicle separated at nearly a 90-degree angle.
The passenger was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. Authorities have not released the person’s identity or current medical condition.
The driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of DUI.
Investigators also indicated that speed may have contributed to the crash, although the exact cause remains under investigation.
