Fresno, CA – May 18, 2026 | Ayuda California News

A Selma man was killed, and a 3-year-old child was critically injured following a crash on Highway 41 in Fresno early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The victim was identified as 31-year-old Carlos Sandoval.

What Happened

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP):

  • The crash occurred around 2:25 a.m. on Highway 41 near Highway 180
  • A Toyota Camry was stopped in one of the lanes for reasons still under investigation
  • A 33-year-old Fresno woman driving a Kia Optima in the same lane rear-ended the Toyota

Following the impact:

  • Both vehicles spun out of control
  • Carlos Sandoval was transported to the hospital, where he later died
  • A 3-year-old child suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition

Authorities stated that the child was wearing a seat belt but was not properly secured in an appropriate child safety seat.

Additionally:

  • A passenger in the Kia suffered serious injuries
  • The driver sustained minor injuries

CHP reported that alcohol may have been a factor involving the Toyota driver’s case, pending toxicology results.

Child Safety Seats: A Critical Factor in Serious Crashes

Authorities continue to emphasize that young children must travel in proper child restraint systems.

Under California law:

  • Children under certain age and height requirements must use appropriate car seats
  • Improper restraint use can significantly increase the risk of severe injury in rear-end or high-speed crashes

Legal Perspective: Multiple Factors Under Investigation

This case may involve shared liability depending on the final investigation findings.

🔹 What Authorities Are Investigating

  • Why the Toyota was stopped in the traffic lane
  • Possible alcohol impairment or intoxication
  • Braking distance and reaction time of the Kia driver
  • Proper use of child safety restraints

🔹 Relevant California Laws

  • Unsafe speed and vehicle control (CVC § 22350)
  • DUI and driving under the influence (CVC § 23152)
  • Child passenger safety requirements (CVC § 27360)

Rights of Victims and Families

Injured victims and surviving family members may have the right to pursue compensation for:

✔️ Wrongful death claims (CPC § 377.60 – 377.61)
✔️ Medical and hospital expenses
✔️ Pediatric treatment and rehabilitation
✔️ Pain and suffering damages
✔️ Loss of financial and emotional support

When a child suffers catastrophic injuries, claims may also include long-term medical and care needs.
