In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the Redwood City community, an individual lost their life after being struck by a Caltrain on Tuesday afternoon. This unfortunate incident marks the eighth fatality that the transportation agency has recorded so far this year.
Around 12:30 p.m., Train 116, traveling south near Whipple Avenue, collided with an individual whose identity has yet to be confirmed. The impact resulted in the tragic death of the person involved.
Fortunately, none of the 75 passengers on board the train suffered injuries, confirmed Dan Lieberman, Caltrain’s Public Affairs Officer.
In response to this sad event, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, Transit Police, and the county coroner were present at the scene to conduct the necessary investigations, according to Lieberman’s statements. Track clearing operations were completed before 3 p.m., allowing railway operations to resume.
Trains serving nearby locations such as Menlo Park, San Mateo, and Palo Alto experienced delays of around 30 minutes due to the cleanup and response efforts at the scene. Passengers on Train 116 were transferred to another train after experiencing a delay of over an hour.
It is concerning to note that six out of the eight fatalities recorded on the Caltrain line throughout the year have occurred in the past two months. According to Caltrain reports, on July 14th, an “intruder” at the Stanford stop in Palo Alto lost their life after being struck by a train carrying 150 passengers. Additionally, on July 6th, two individuals lost their lives in separate accidents in Mountain View and Palo Alto. The list of tragedies continues, with another individual losing their life on July 22nd after being struck north of the Santa Clara station, followed by the tragic incident where a sixth person was struck and killed in a tunnel in San Francisco on August 4th.
This tragic Caltrain accident in Redwood City highlights the pressing need for railway safety and the commitment of authorities and the community at large to prevent accidents of this nature in the future.
