LOS ANGELES, CA – A federal jury awarded $7.25 million in compensation for an injury at Universal Studios Hollywood to a 74-year-old woman from Arizona, who suffered a spinal injury after falling while exiting the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride.
The plaintiff, Pamela Morrison, was visiting the park with her grandson in September 2022 when her safety harness malfunctioned, and she was removed from the ride. However, as she attempted to exit, she slipped and fell due to a lack of safety measures in the exit area.
Negligence in Park Safety
According to the lawsuit, Morrison sustained a compression fracture in her spine because the park staff did not stop the moving walkway to allow her to exit safely.
Universal Studios prioritized the flow of visitors over the safety of their guests.
“It would have taken them just four seconds to stop the ride, but they kept it running to meet their quota of 1,800 passengers per hour”.
Conversely, Universal Studios’ attorneys argued that Morrison wasn’t paying attention to where she was stepping because she was distracted by her grandson.
The Jury Verdict
After a three-day trial, the jury deliberated for four hours on February 14, finding Universal Studios Hollywood guilty of the hazardous conditions that caused Morrison’s fall.
The compensation is broken down as follows:
- $250,000 for future medical expenses
- $2 million for past pain and suffering
- $5 million for future pain and suffering
“The fall completely changed her life, and that’s what the jury saw,” was stated after the verdict.
Universal Studios Hollywood has yet to comment on the decision.
