Cruise Recalls 950 Autonomous Vehicles After Pedestrian Accident in San Francisco [San Francisco, CA]

San Francisco, California – The autonomous vehicle unit of General Motors (GM.N) has announced the recall of 950 driverless vehicles across the United States following an accident involving one of its robotaxis.

This decision, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), comes in response to potential inadequate collision detection system responses from Cruise Automated Driving Systems (ADS) software after a pedestrian accident in San Francisco.

The recall of autonomous vehicles has been carried out to address circumstances in which the Cruise AV software fails to respond appropriately following a collision, resulting in attempts to stop outside of traffic rather than remaining stationary.

Additionally, Cruise has decided to temporarily suspend production of its Cruise Origin autonomous vehicle, following the suspension of its license by California regulators, who deemed Cruise’s autonomous vehicles as a risk to the public.

Cruise has emphasized its commitment to safety and has announced the hiring of a Chief Safety Officer, as well as an external review.

The company has made it clear that as its software is improved, more recalls are expected to inform the NHTSA and the public about updates aimed at enhancing safety across its entire fleet.

Unfortunately, accidents involving defective products continue to be a concern, causing injuries and in fatal cases, the loss of millions of lives. It is the responsibility of both manufacturers and retailers to maintain optimal systems and properly functional products to prevent these tragedies.
