Fatal Crash on the 101 Freeway Causes Major Disruptions in Sherman Oaks

Sherman Oaks, CA – March 4, 2026 | Ayuda California News

A fatal crash on the 101 Freeway caused major lane closures and hours of traffic delays early Wednesday morning in Sherman Oaks after a pickup truck overturned and destroyed part of a highway guardrail.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received reports of the crash shortly after 3:00 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway near the interchange with the 405 Freeway.

What We Know About the Crash

When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found an overturned pickup truck.

According to authorities:

  • The driver was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
  • The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The victim’s identity has not yet been released.

The impact destroyed a section of the guardrail separating the main freeway lanes from the access ramp to the 405 Freeway, forcing emergency repair crews to respond.

Morning Traffic Chaos

Following the crash, officials issued a SigAlert, leaving only one lane open on northbound I-101 and closing the transition ramp to the southbound 405 Freeway.

This caused:

  • Traffic congestion of up to four miles
  • Major delays on the 405 Freeway
  • Detours affecting thousands of commuters during rush hour

Crews were able to reopen three lanes around 8:45 a.m., while the ramp to the 405 remained closed longer.

All lanes were finally reopened around 11:30 a.m.

Investigation Ongoing

CHP continues to investigate what caused the crash.

In accidents where a driver is ejected from a vehicle, investigators typically examine factors such as:

  • Seatbelt use
  • Vehicle speed
  • Loss of control or rollover dynamics
  • Roadway conditions
