DAVIS, CA– A motorcyclist lost his life in a tragic, fatal crash on I-80 in Davis early Tuesday morning, near Mace Boulevard, as the California Highway Patrol (CHP) continues to search for a truck that may have been involved in the collision.
The accident was reported around 4:45 a.m., when a Volvo trailer with multiple trailers was traveling in the center lane of a construction zone. According to investigators, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle struck the rear of the trailer.
The impact threw the motorcyclist into traffic lanes, where he was run over by another vehicle that did not stop. The driver fled the scene, and authorities have yet to identify the truck or vehicle responsible.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcyclist’s name will be released once his family is notified, according to the Yolo County Coroner’s Office.
Investigation Ongoing
- CHP initially searched for a dump truck, but so far, the vehicle remains unidentified.
- Alcohol or drugs are not suspected as factors in the crash.
- Eastbound I-80 lanes were closed for several hours during the investigation.
CHP asks anyone with information to contact its Woodland office at (530) 702-6250.
Families’ Rights in Hit-and-Run Cases
In California, when a driver flees the scene of a fatal accident, the victim’s family has the right to seek justice through a wrongful death claim and, in some cases, pursue compensation through insurance even if the responsible driver is never located.
- California Vehicle Code §20001 – Requires any driver involved in a crash causing injury or death to stop and provide information. Fleeing the scene is a felony.
- California Code of Civil Procedure §377.60 – Allows direct family members to file a wrongful death claim.
- California Insurance Code – In cases where the responsible driver is unidentified, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM) may cover the family’s expenses and losses.
Claims may include:
💔 Funeral and emergency medical expenses
💔 Loss of the victim’s future income
💔 Emotional damages for loss of companionship, love, and support
