Fatal Hit-and-Run in Davenport Involves Multiple Vehicles

Davenport, CA – While walking along Highway 1, a man was fatally struck by a vehicle that fled the scene—and was likely hit by additional vehicles afterward—according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The tragic hit-and-run in Davenport occurred Sunday night, north of Scott Creek and about six miles south of the San Mateo–Santa Cruz county line.

Details of the Fatal Collision

At 11:17 p.m., CHP officers responded to reports of a collision on Highway 1, where a man, believed to be between 30 and 40 years old, was found dead in the southbound lane.

Preliminary investigation indicates:

  • A vehicle traveling southbound struck the pedestrian, who was walking in the same lane
  • After the initial impact, the driver fled the scene.
  • The victim’s body remained on the roadway, where it may have been hit by additional vehicles that likely couldn’t stop in time.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released. CHP continues investigating and urging anyone with relevant information to call 831-219-0200.

Hit-and-Runs: A Silent Epidemic in California

Hit-and-run cases are on the rise across the state. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 1 in 5 pedestrian fatalities involve drivers who flee the scene. These types of crashes are devastating and make the legal process more difficult for families, as the responsible party is not immediately identified.

In rural areas like Davenport, poor visibility and lack of sidewalks or proper lighting are common risk factors in these tragedies.
