The driver continued northbound after the collision and left the scene. Police are still investigating.
Key details reported so far include:
- Two pedestrians were struck
- One victim later died

What Does California Law Say About Leaving an Accident Scene?
California Vehicle Code Section 20001 requires a motorist involved in a collision resulting in another person’s injury or death to immediately stop at the scene and fulfill the driver’s legal obligations.
When a driver leaves a crash that results in death or permanent serious injury, the law provides for potential criminal penalties that can include imprisonment and fines.
Civil liability is a separate issue. Even when a driver flees, injured victims and surviving family members may have options for seeking compensation once responsible parties and available insurance coverage are identified.
What Should Spanish-Speaking Families Do After a Hit-and-Run?
After a pedestrian hit-and-run, identifying and preserving evidence may be especially important because the responsible driver may not be located immediately.
Victims and families may consider preserving:
- The police collision report
- Photos, videos, and nearby surveillance footage
- Witness contact information
- Medical records and bills
- Documentation of lost wages
- Communications with insurance companies
- Information about potentially available insurance coverage
A personal injury claim may seek compensation for medical expenses, future treatment, lost income, pain and suffering, and other injury-related losses. When a pedestrian dies, certain surviving relatives may also have options for pursuing a wrongful death claim.
California generally provides two years from the date of injury to file a personal injury lawsuit, although exceptions and shorter deadlines may apply in certain cases.
Families should therefore not assume they must wait until the hit-and-run driver is found before reviewing their legal options.
