Rancho Cucamonga, California – The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred on I-15 near Summit Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga, California.
The accident happened around 1:40 p.m. on August 12, 2024, when a vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction in the northbound lanes of the highway.
The 2004 GMC Yukon, which had been reported stolen, was traveling at approximately 80 mph in the right shoulder lane.
The SUV exited the highway via the Summit Avenue northbound entrance ramp and collided head-on with a 2017 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by a 63-year-old man from West Covina.
The impact left the GMC driver, an unidentified Hispanic adult male, trapped inside the vehicle.
He was rescued by the San Bernardino County Fire Department and transported by ambulance to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:36 p.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol, at least eight Fontana Police Department patrols arrived shortly after the accident to assist in closing the entrance ramp.
It is currently unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office has yet to release the identity of the deceased.
