Bakersfield, CA—A county firefighter survived a hit-and-run accident while battling a cargo truck fire early Sunday morning, March 16, 2025. The incident in California occurred on Highway 99, north of David Road, raising serious concerns about the safety of emergency responders on the state’s roadways.
Incident Details
According to the Kern County Fire Department (KCFD), at 12:09 a.m., crews responded to a tractor-trailer fire, with the trailer fully engulfed in flames. As firefighters worked to contain the blaze, one noticed a vehicle rapidly approaching the scene.
The firefighter managed to throw himself against the fire truck in an attempt to avoid the collision but was grazed by the vehicle and sustained injuries that, fortunately, were not life-threatening. The driver responsible fled the scene without offering assistance.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating the incident and is currently searching for a white Chevrolet sedan, with the model year yet to be determined.
Road Safety: A Call for Awareness
The KCFD emphasized that “this type of accident highlights the daily dangers firefighters and first responders face. Highways are high-risk zones, and drivers must slow down and move over when approaching emergency scenes.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), hit-and-run accidents have increased by 7% in California in recent years, seriously affecting roadside workers and pedestrians. State law requires drivers to remain at the scene after an accident and provide assistance.
