Two children, ages 6 and 9, lost their lives in a tragic crash in Lebec on Christmas Day on Interstate 5, after the vehicle they were riding in was violently struck by another car, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
What We Know About the Crash
According to authorities, the collision occurred shortly before 3:00 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-5.
Preliminary findings indicate:
- A Nissan Rogue, driven by Jorge Preciado, lost control.
- The vehicle crashed into the rear of a Toyota RAV4 that was stopped in the center median.
- Three children were riding in the Nissan, reportedly without seat belts or child safety seats.
- The children were ejected from the vehicle upon impact.
- Two of the children died at the scene.
Authorities have not yet explained why the Toyota RAV4 was stopped in the median at the time of the collision.
Criminal Charges
The driver of the Nissan was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment, a serious offense under California law.
CHP Captain Bob Purvis stated:
“This is an important reminder that child safety seats are critical to protecting children’s lives on the road.”
The investigation remains ongoing to determine whether additional factors—such as excessive speed, distraction, or further negligence—played a role.
