Man Loses Hand in Boat Accident at Lake Berryessa

A 39-year-old man from Richmond experienced partial hand amputation in a boat accident involving the propeller at Lake Berryessa. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office has reported the details of this unfortunate incident and emphasized the significance of taking precautions to avoid such tragedies.

According to Henry Wofford, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, the incident occurred when the man was sitting on the boat’s bow and accidentally fell into the water, with his hand getting caught in the dangerous propeller.

Fortunately, the man’s family members who were also on the boat acted swiftly and pulled him out of the water immediately after the accident. They dialed 911 for emergency assistance. Deputy Nick DeGuilio arrived at the scene promptly and realized the severity of the injury; a portion of the man’s hand had been amputated.

In response to the critical situation, DeGuilio applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding and requested urgent medical aid. A California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter arrived at the location within 20 minutes to transport the man to the Kaiser Hospital Trauma Center in Vacaville, where he could receive specialized medical attention.

This unfortunate boat accident at Lake Berryessa serves as a reminder of the importance of taking precautions while enjoying water activities. According to Wofford, one recurring issue is passengers sitting on the boat’s bow while it’s in operation, which can be extremely hazardous. Therefore, it is essential to wear life jackets at all times and adhere to established safety guidelines.

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office also highlighted that during the weekend, due to a heatwave in California, Lake Berryessa experienced a considerable influx of people seeking entertainment and relief from the heat. However, it is crucial to remember that safety should always be the number one priority.

Since January 1, 2020, there have been 11 fatal drownings at Lake Berryessa, raising concerns for authorities. As a result, an urgent call is made to all lake visitors and water sports enthusiasts to always use life jackets and follow safety guidelines.

The accident at Lake Berryessa is a tragic demonstration of the dangers that can arise when enjoying water activities without taking proper precautions. If you or a loved one is injured in a boat accident caused by someone else’s negligence, you may seek legal assistance to obtain the medical treatment you need and the compensation you deserve.
