Riverside, CA – March 30, 2026 | Ayuda California News
A 3-month-old baby was killed, and at least five others — including a toddler — were injured in a multi-car crash on Interstate 215 in Riverside, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the northbound lanes, just south of the Eucalyptus Avenue exit.
What Happened
Preliminary reports from CHP indicate a chain-reaction rear-end collision involving three vehicles:
- A Honda Civic slowed and stopped due to heavy traffic
- A Nissan Versa rear-ended the Honda
- A Toyota RAV4 then struck the Nissan from behind
The Nissan, carrying two adults and two children, sustained catastrophic rear-end damage.
Both children, a toddler and a 3-month-old, were seated in car seats.
Emergency responders worked to extricate the occupants as bystanders attempted to help, but were unable to open the severely damaged doors.
The 3-month-old infant was pronounced dead at the scene.
The toddler was rescued, placed in a neck brace, and transported to the hospital.
Rear-End Collisions: More Dangerous Than They Appear
While rear-end crashes are often considered “minor,” high-speed or multi-vehicle collisions can be deadly — especially for passengers in the back seat.
Under California Vehicle Code § 21703, drivers must maintain a safe following distance to prevent this type of crash.
Chain-reaction collisions often involve:
- Delayed braking
- Following too closely
- Sudden traffic slowdowns
Legal Perspective: Multi-Vehicle Liability
In multi-car crashes like this, liability is often shared.
Investigators will analyze:
- Which driver initiated the chain reaction
- Whether drivers maintained a safe distance
- Speed and reaction times
- Traffic conditions
California follows a pure comparative negligence system (Li v. Yellow Cab Co.), meaning multiple drivers can be held responsible for their respective percentages of fault.
Rights of Victims and Families
When a fatal crash involves a child, families may have the right to file a wrongful death claim under California Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 – 377.61.
This may include compensation for:
✔️ Funeral and burial expenses
✔️ Loss of companionship and emotional support
✔️ Loss of future financial contributions (where applicable)
Injury victims may also seek compensation for:
✔️ Medical treatment and hospitalization
✔️ Long-term care and rehabilitation
✔️ Pain and suffering
