Fatal Crash on I-5 Freeway Triggers Massive Fire

Fresno County, California — A devastating crash on the I-5 freeway near Coalinga left three people dead and sparked a 90-acre wildfire, according to Cal Fire and the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The collision occurred on Thursday, June 19, around 7:40 p.m., when a wrong-way driver struck a utility van head-on, causing a multi-vehicle tragedy.

All three vehicles involved — a Jeep Grand Cherokee, the utility van, and a Toyota Venza — were engulfed in flames. The Jeep’s driver and both van occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger in the Toyota sustained minor injuries. The resulting wildfire, the Coal Fire, spread across 90 acres of vegetation and led to a four-hour road closure.
