Madera County, California – A suspected DUI crash in Madera County resulted in one fatality and multiple minor injuries last Sunday, August 18, 2024.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident occurred just after 11 p.m. on Highway 145 near Toja Road, east of Madera. According to officers, the driver of a Dodge Charger was heading westbound when he crossed into the eastbound lane, colliding head-on with a Ford truck. The driver of the Ford succumbed to injuries at the scene.
Following the initial collision, a chain reaction of crashes ensued. A Nissan Rogue struck the Dodge Charger, causing the Nissan to spin out. Shortly after, the Nissan was hit by a Toyota Prius, and a Dodge pickup collided with the Charger, which had come to rest in the middle of the roadway.
The Charger caught fire, but responding officers were able to rescue the driver from the burning vehicle. Other drivers involved in the subsequent crashes sustained minor injuries.
The incident is under investigation, with authorities suspecting DUI was a factor in the tragic sequence of events.
