Southern California Wildfires Estimated to Cost $52 Billion

LOS ANGELES, California – The devastating wildfires currently raging across Southern California, including the Eaton Fire, Palisades Fire, and Woodley Fire, are estimated to cost between $52 billion and $57 billion, according to a preliminary report released by AccuWeather on Jan. 8. The fires have already forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate and claimed the lives of two civilians.

The reported costs account for damage to expensive real estate from Santa Monica to Malibu, disruptions to tourism, and long-term health issues caused by smoke inhalation and other wildfire-related impacts.

“This is already one of the worst wildfires in California history,” said Jonathan Porter, Chief Meteorologist at AccuWeather. “Should a large number of additional structures be burned in the coming days, it may become the worst wildfire in modern California history based on the number of structures burned and economic loss.”

The fires, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, continue to spread across Los Angeles County, forcing families to leave their homes and businesses behind. For many, the emotional toll of losing cherished belongings, homes, and livelihoods far outweighs the financial impact.

Historical Context

Wildfires in California have caused immense destruction over the years. Moody’s 2024 report states that wildfires have resulted in $70 billion in insured losses from 40 major incidents over the past decade.

Additionally, a report by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation found that between 2017 and 2021, California’s annual economic costs of wildfires—including property damage, loss of life, and labor disruptions—averaged $117.4 billion. This included an estimated $5 billion annual fiscal loss for the state due to reduced tax revenues and increased emergency response costs.
