PIEDMONT, California – A tragic crash early past Wednesday morning left three people dead and one seriously injured when a Tesla crashed and caught fire in Piedmont, Northern California. Authorities believe speed may have been a contributing factor to the single-vehicle accident.
The Cybertruck crash occurred at approximately 3:10 a.m. as the Cybertruck’s occupants were returning from a “function.” According to Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers, someone driving a separate vehicle from the same event was able to rescue the sole survivor from the burning Cybertruck.
The identities of the victims have not been released, respecting the privacy of their families.
Responding officers attempted to extinguish the fire using their equipment, but it was ultimately the Piedmont Fire Department that quickly brought the blaze under control. Fire Chief Dave Brannigan indicated that the speed of extinguishing the flames suggests that the Cybertruck’s lithium-ion battery was not involved in the fire, classifying the incident as a “typical car fire.”
Investigation and Vehicle Safety
Chief Bowers noted that initial findings point to speed as a likely factor in the collision. He also addressed concerns about recent Tesla Cybertruck recalls, stating, “There’s no indication that there were mechanical defects that were the primary cause for the collision.” Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
A Reminder of Road Safety
This devastating accident serves as a reminder of the dangers of speeding, especially during nighttime hours. Authorities urge all drivers to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution to prevent similar tragedies.
