Monterey County, CA – September 11, 2025 | Ayuda California News
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed that two people were killed and another seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon south of Salinas.
How the Crash Happened
Around 4:16 p.m., a red sedan was waiting to make a left turn on Highway 183 near Cooper Road.
- The sedan was rear-ended by a gray GMC SUV, which pushed it into the opposite lane.
- A northbound semi-truck then collided directly with the sedan, nearly destroying it completely.
The Victims
The two people killed were identified by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office as:
- Aristeo Cruz Jiménez, 31, of Port Hueneme
- Marcos Cruz Alia, 35, of Salinas
The sedan’s driver, a 20-year-old man, was transported to the hospital with major injuries.
The GMC Driver Fled
According to CHP, the GMC driver—a 19-year-old woman from Salinas—fled the crash scene. She was later located, though authorities have not confirmed whether she will be arrested or face charges. Officials added that drugs or alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the crash.
Highway 183 remained closed for several hours while investigators worked at the scene.
Legal Rights for Victims’ Families
In accidents like this, families of those killed may file a wrongful death claim under the California Code of Civil Procedure §377.60 – 377.61.
Possible claims may be brought against:
- The GMC driver, for causing the initial impact and fleeing the scene.
- The owner of the GMC vehicle, if different from the driver.
- Third parties (e.g., repair shops, transportation companies) if a mechanical failure contributed to the crash.
Families may pursue compensation for:
- Funeral and emergency medical expenses
- Loss of future income and financial support
- Emotional damages for loss of companionship and care
- Punitive damages (Civil Code §3294) if fleeing the scene is proven to have aggravated the negligence
