LOS ANGELES COUNTY, California—Traffic along the I-5 Grapevine remains heavily impacted by the Route Fire, a fast-moving wildfire that erupted Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles County. According to officials, the fire has consumed over 5,200 acres and resulted in eight firefighters suffering heat-related injuries.
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) closed both directions of I-5 late Wednesday as flames spread rapidly across the area. As of Thursday morning, one lane in each direction between Lake Hughes Road and Templin Highway remains closed. No timeline has been provided for when the closures will be lifted.
Evacuations and Fire Containment Efforts
The Los Angeles County Fire Department reported that the fire is about 12% contained as of Thursday morning. Evacuation orders were issued for the following areas:
- North of Northlake Hills Elementary School
- South of Templin Highway (including Paradise Ranch Mobile Estates)
- East of I-5
- West of Castaic Lagoon
Evacuation orders have since been lifted for areas south of Northlake Hills Elementary School. Fortunately, no civilian injuries have been reported, but the eight firefighters injured while battling the flames are a stark reminder of the danger posed by wildfires.
Community Impact
The Route Fire has disrupted thousands of commuters traveling along I-5 and affected nearby communities, including Castaic, a location many Fresno residents may recognize as the home of Magic Mountain.
According to Caltrans, updates on lane closures can be found on their QuickMap website for real-time information.
