Two Fatalities and Nine Injured in a 35-Vehicle Accident

Bakersfield, California – A tragic chain-reaction accident involving 35 vehicles has left two people dead, and nine others hospitalized, in the foggy section of Interstate 5 west of Bakersfield. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, January 6, 2024, has caused an extended closure on southbound Interstate 5 between Millux Road and Old River Road.

Emergency teams responded to the call of a collision on southbound Interstate 5 near Millux Road around 7:30 a.m. The dense fog was a key factor contributing to the pileup of vehicles. Jim Calhoun, from the Kern County Fire Department, described the scene as “chaotic,” with visibility reduced to approximately 10 feet.

The collision involved a total of 35 vehicles, including 17 passenger vehicles and 18 large trucks. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives at the accident site, while nine others were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The accident site stretched approximately half a kilometer, and firefighting teams took a strategic approach by first tending to the critically injured patients. Emergency attention focused on providing assistance to the victims and coordinating the response to this tragedy.

As of Saturday night, the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 between Millux Road and Old River Road remain closed. Caltrans has implemented traffic diversions, redirecting drivers to eastbound Highway 223, as investigations and cleanup efforts continue in the affected area.

This 35-vehicle accident in Bakersfield underscores the importance of caution and safe driving, especially in adverse weather conditions. Authorities urge drivers to stay informed about traffic updates and follow the directions of emergency teams on Interstate 5.
