A loose horse caused a crash on Highway 41, leaving several people injured — including victims with serious head injuries — according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred shortly before 4:00 a.m. south of Coarsegold.
What Happened
According to the preliminary investigation:
- The driver of a Honda CR-V stopped after seeing a horse on the roadway
- A second vehicle, a Honda Accord, was unable to see the animal in time and struck it
- After hitting the horse, the Accord was redirected into the stopped CR-V
- The vehicle then left the roadway and went down an embankment
As a result:
- The Accord driver suffered serious head injuries
- Three passengers were also injured
- All victims were airlifted to hospitals in Fresno
The horse died at the scene.
