Bakersfield Car Crash: Iconic ‘Big Shoe’ Building Gets Hit Again

On Wednesday morning, a vehicle crashed into Bakersfield’s iconic “Big Shoe” building on Chester Avenue. Emergency responders received a report of a collision at the intersection of Chester Avenue and 10th Street around 11 a.m. According to witnesses, at least two vehicles were involved in the accident, and one of them crashed into the Big Shoe Repair building.

The owner of the Big Shoe business, Felipe Torres, was the only one inside the building at the time of the crash and stated he was shaken up but unharmed. He reported that he was working when he heard a car’s tires screeching, followed by a loud crash.

This isn’t the first time the Big Shoe has required repairs after being hit by a car. Salomon Olvera, the building’s owner, stated that he and Felipe would fix it because it’s a significant piece of Bakersfield history. The iconic building was constructed in 1947 and has a semi-glorious past in commercial advertising.

The building has been featured in several national campaigns, including a 1989 DuPont carpeting promotion. It has also appeared in publications such as U.S. News and World Report, Time, Newsweek, Fortune, People, Smithsonian magazine, Architectural Digest, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing, and the identities of the drivers involved in the accident have not been released.
