Collapse on California’s Highway 1 in Big Sur

Big Sur, California – A stretch of the picturesque Highway 1 collapsed into the ocean after heavy rains, trapping around 1,600 people in this coastal community. The incident occurred near the Rocky Creek Bridge, south of Monterey, causing traffic chaos in both directions. 

Vehicles resumed travel on Monday, April 1, 2024, though traffic remained a challenge. Residents and travelers faced significant challenges, with some stranded in the town and having to spend the night in their vehicles or seeking shelter at places like the Big Sur Lodge, which opened its conference room to provide temporary accommodation.

Caltrans authorities are taking steps to ensure the safety of travelers and construction workers. Teams are expected to begin installing concrete barriers to create a secure lane and stabilize the edge of the highway. However, a clear date for the full reopening of the road has not yet been established.
