BAKERSFIELD, California — Tragedy struck on Highway 65, east of Delano, as a hit-and-run crash involving a semi-truck and multiple vehicles claimed the life of a local resident. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the incident, which occurred on Friday, March 1st, 2024.
At approximately 5:30 p.m., CHP responded to reports of a multi-vehicle collision north of Highway 155. Preliminary investigations revealed that an unidentified model semi-truck towing a fifth wheel was heading northbound on Highway 65. Unexpectedly, the truck lost its left wheel from the fifth-wheel trailer.
The loose wheel careened into the southbound lanes, striking an International big rig. Subsequently, the tire bounced back, where it collided with a Toyota. The impact forced the International semi-truck off course, causing it to veer into the northbound lanes, where it collided with a Honda, according to CHP officials.
Tragically, the 52-year-old driver of the Honda, a resident of Bakersfield, succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Toyota escaped unscathed.
The 30-year-old driver of the International semi-truck, hailing from Brea, California, remained at the site of the collision. However, he sustained moderate injuries and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Authorities indicated that the driver of the unidentified truck hauling the fifth wheel continued northbound on Highway 65 following the incident. Alcohol or drugs do not seem to have played a role in the crash, according to CHP.
The loss of life and the circumstances surrounding the hit-and-run incident have cast a somber shadow over the community. CHP continues its investigation into the tragic event as they work to bring closure to the affected families and ensure justice is served.
