Fatality on Highway 101: Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle

Ventura County, CA – A tragic incident occurred on southbound Highway 101, specifically in the Solimar Beach area, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Official reports indicate that the incident involved a pedestrian who was struck after a vehicle ran out of gas along the highway.

Before 9 p.m., CHP dispatchers received a call from a man driving a Nissan Pathfinder who had run out of gas. The driver was forced to pull over to the side of the road in the stretch between Ventura and La Conchita.

Approximately 15 minutes later, another driver alerted about a person walking in the slow lane, using a walker. Shortly after, a traffic collision was reported, in which the pedestrian was hit by a pickup truck.

As of Tuesday afternoon, investigators were diligently working to reconstruct the exact events that led to this tragedy, according to Sergeant Frank Vargas from the CHP office in Ventura.

It’s unclear whether the Nissan stopped on the shoulder or if it might have been obstructing a traffic lane, Vargas mentioned. Investigators are also trying to determine if the struck pedestrian is the same person who initially reported running out of gas. The pedestrian was estimated to be between 60 and 70 years old, but their identity has not been disclosed yet.

Officials found an intact walker at the accident scene, as well as fragments of another walker, Vargas stated. The driver of the pickup truck stopped at the scene and fully cooperated with the authorities. No arrests were made in connection with the incident.

The southbound lanes were temporarily closed, diverting motorists at the Seacliff interchange to Pacific Coast Highway. However, all lanes on Highway 101 were reported to have reopened around 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday.
