SANTA CRUZ, California – A 45-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly committing a hate crime against an LGBTQ+ bar on Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz, authorities announced Friday.
Details of the Incident
The Santa Cruz Police Department (SCPD) identified the suspect as James Eason, who targeted the newly opened bar, The Neighbors Pub, on December 10. Surveillance footage showed a masked man vandalizing the pub before walking away while pulling a wagon.
The vandalism included an offensive message etched into the glass front doors of the bar. Additionally, investigators found evidence of arson at the scene. Burnt materials were recovered near the front entrance, and a section of the wall close to the doorway was scorched, police said.
Breakthrough in the Case
Although the vandal’s identity was initially unknown, a significant breakthrough came earlier this week when officers arrested Eason for an unrelated crime. Police compared body camera footage from that arrest with surveillance images from the pub and confirmed that Eason was the same individual responsible for the hate crime.
Charges Filed
Eason was re-booked into custody on Friday, facing multiple charges, including vandalism, committing a hate crime, and attempted arson.
A Call for Unity
This incident underscores the persistent challenges faced by LGBTQ+ establishments and communities. The Neighbors Pub, a space meant to foster inclusion and celebrate diversity, was instead targeted with hateful acts. Authorities and community leaders continue to stress the importance of standing against hate crimes and fostering environments of acceptance and safety.
