Man Dies after Jumping from Stolen CHP Vehicle in Bakersfield

(Bakersfield, CA) A high-speed chase in Bakerfield, California ended in tragedy on Tuesday afternoon when a man traveling in a stolen CHP vehicle died after jumping out of the car in the middle of the highway.

The suspect, who reportedly suffered from mental health issues, stole the California Highway Patrol vehicle while the officer who was driving it was investigating a collision in the Santa Clarita area.

When being pursued by police, the suspect pulled out a shotgun and an assault rifle, although authorities and media outlets indicate that the weapons in the vehicle were secured.

The chase ended on Highway 138 near 90th Street when the suspect jumped out of the moving vehicle, hitting his head and neck. Authorities moved the body to the side of the road to attempt to provide aid and transport was requested to the hospital, however, the driver of the stolen CHP vehicle in Bakersfield was declared dead at the hospital due to severe injuries.

The reasons why the suspect stole the vehicle and then jumped out of it are still unknown. It is also unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved in the suspect’s actions, but it has been discovered that the deceased suffered from severe mental health issues.
