(Bakersfield, CA) A man died after being hit by a car on Highway 58 in Bakersfield Saturday morning. Authorities report that the driver responsible fled the scene.
According to a CHP report, an unknown vehicle was traveling west in the number three lane of Highway 58 in Bakersfield, just east of Dr. Luther King Jr. Boulevard around midnight Saturday. A pedestrian, at least 39 years old, was walking in the same lane.
The pedestrian was hit by the hit-and-run driver shortly after midnight and was then hit by three more vehicles, an Acura, a Toyota, and a Tesla, which could not stop in time. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of the accident, all parties involved (except the first driver) remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. It is currently unknown whether drugs or alcohol were a contributing factors in the accident.
The hit-and-run accident on Highway 58 highlights the importance of road safety and the lack of traffic education that occurs in some California counties. Although the current reasons for the victim’s presence on the Highway 58 lane are unknown, the hit-and-run driver failed in their moral and empathetic obligation to stop and try to save the victim’s life.
