Newberry Springs, CA – July 5, 2026 | Ayuda California News
A 66-year-old woman was killed and several people, including a minor, suffered serious injuries in a rear-end crash on Interstate 15 during the Independence Day weekend, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred around 12:10 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 15, south of Harvard Road in Newberry Springs.
What Happened?
According to CHP’s preliminary investigation:
- A 2024 Porsche was traveling in the left lane behind a 2024 Honda.
- Both vehicles were approaching slowing traffic.
- For reasons still under investigation, the Porsche driver failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of the Honda.
As a result of the crash:
- Elvira Nemenzo, 66, who was riding in the rear seat of the Honda, died at the scene.
- A minor passenger and another occupant suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
- Another Honda passenger and the Porsche driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the collision.
Rear-End Crashes Can Also Be Fatal
Although many people assume rear-end collisions cause only minor damage, these crashes can be devastating when they occur at high speeds or on freeways.
Common injuries include:
- Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)
- Neck and spinal cord injuries
- Multiple fractures
- Internal injuries
- Fatal injuries, especially among vulnerable passengers
Legal Perspective: What Are Authorities Investigating?
In a rear-end crash, investigators often focus on whether the driver maintained a safe following distance and responded appropriately to changing traffic conditions.
Authorities may examine:
Potential Liability Factors
- Following another vehicle too closely (CVC § 21703)
- Unsafe speed for traffic conditions (CVC § 22350)
- Distracted driving, including illegal cellphone use (CVC § 23123.5)
- Reaction time and braking distance
Investigators may also review witness statements, vehicle damage, electronic records, and onboard camera footage when available.
Rights of Victims and Their Families
When someone is injured or killed in a car accident, California law allows victims and surviving family members to explore civil claims if another person acted negligently.
Depending on the facts of the case, compensation may include:
- Current and future medical expenses
- Rehabilitation and specialized care
- Lost income and reduced earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
When a crash results in death, eligible family members may also pursue a wrongful death claim under California Code of Civil Procedure §§ 377.60–377.61 to seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and loss of companionship.
