Sailor Suffers Brain Death After Trying to Stop the Theft of His Vehicle

A sailor suffers brain death after preventing thieves from stealing his car last Sunday in San Diego. Eddie Foster, a 32-year-old sailor, tried to stop the robbery of his vehicle but was unfortunately thrown off the hood of his car.

Diane Medlen, the victim’s mother, stated on Tuesday that he had a strong desire to donate organs. “Now, he is fulfilling his final wish,” she commented.

According to Medlen, her son Eddie Foster, a 32-year-old sailor with four children, worked part-time as an Amazon package delivery driver before and after his regular job.

He was performing that task when two teenagers attempted to take his car on Sunday morning. “He felt that the car was the only means to support his family and secure their financial stability,” said Medlen.

Around 5:20 a.m. on Sunday, someone called 911 to report seeing a man on the hood of a cream-colored sedan, screaming as it drove down Orange Avenue.

That call was quickly followed by a report that the car had crashed into the toll booth of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and that the driver and passenger had fled.

Officers found the man, Foster, in a nearby traffic lane, suffering life-threatening injuries. Upon being hospitalized, brain death was identified, but he remains connected to enforce his final wish of organ donation.

Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends.

The police located the alleged driver and passenger on an access road to the bridge. The driver, 18-year-old Ricardo Gongora Vasquez, was arrested on multiple charges, including attempted murder and car theft. His passenger was not arrested. According to Medlen, she was told the passenger was a 14-year-old girl.

Jail records indicate that Gongora could be prosecuted on Wednesday in the San Diego Superior Court. As of Tuesday, he remained in custody without bail.
