Tarzana, Los Angeles, CA – July 14, 2026 | Ayuda California News
A crash between two big rigs on the 101 Freeway forced the closure of nearly all westbound lanes early Tuesday morning in Tarzana, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The accident occurred around 4:00 a.m. near Tampa Avenue.
What Happened?
According to preliminary information:
- Two big rigs were involved in the collision.
- One of the vehicles overturned.
- The other ended up in a jackknife position.
- A load of concrete blocks was scattered across several freeway lanes.
Authorities initially closed all westbound lanes while emergency crews removed the vehicles and cleared the roadway.
Two lanes were later reopened as crews continued working to restore normal traffic flow.
No injuries have been reported, and authorities have not yet disclosed what caused the crash.
Why Do Crashes Between Big Rigs Require Specialized Investigations?
When a collision involves two large commercial vehicles, the investigation is often more complex than a crash between passenger vehicles.
Authorities may examine:
- Maneuvers made before the impact.
- The speed of both vehicles.
- Following distance (CVC § 21703).
- Safe speed for roadway conditions (CVC § 22350).
- The condition of the brakes, tires, and other mechanical components.
- Electronic driving and braking records.
Because one of the big rigs jackknifed, investigators may also try to determine whether loss of traction, an evasive maneuver, or mechanical failure contributed to the crash.
Legal Perspective: When Commercial Vehicles Are Involved
Commercial drivers and trucking companies must comply with regulations established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
Depending on the investigation findings, authorities may review:
- Maximum driving hours and required rest periods.
- Driver training and commercial licensing.
- Mandatory vehicle inspections.
- Maintenance history.
- Compliance with the trucking company’s safety procedures.
If the crash resulted from mechanical failure or noncompliance with these obligations, the company that owns the big rig may also face civil liability.
Rights of Victims in Big Rig Accidents
When a commercial vehicle accident causes injuries, those affected may have the right to pursue a claim for damages.
Depending on the case, compensation may include:
- Current and future medical expenses.
- Rehabilitation and specialized treatment.
- Lost income and diminished earning capacity.
- Pain and suffering.
- Damages for permanent injuries.
Every case depends on the evidence obtained during the investigation and the final determination of liability.
