LOS ANGELES, California – Recent Southern California rain has provided much-needed relief to ongoing wildfires, but has also heightened the risk of mudslides and debris flows in burn-scarred areas.
The storms swept through the region late Sunday, bringing 0.95 inches of rain to Los Angeles—the most recorded in a single day since last March. While the rain helped firefighters increase containment efforts on major fires, including the Palisades, Hughes, and Eaton Fires, it also triggered flash flood warnings and mudslides, prompting road closures in affected areas.
Mudslides and Flooding Impact the Region
As the rain fell, flash flood warnings were issued late Sunday for Malibu, the Palisades, and Franklin burn scars, highlighting the danger of mud and debris flows in recently burned regions.
Mudslides led to road closures, including:
- Topanga Canyon Road near the Palisades Fire burn area
- Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu
- Angeles Crest Highway near the Eaton burn scar
In addition to mudslides, flooding was reported along sections of the 101 Freeway in East Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and parts of Malibu.
Despite these challenges, the CALfire containment efforts have seen progress:
- Palisades Fire: 94% contained
- Hughes Fire: 95% contained
- Eaton Fire: 98% contained
Fire officials are optimistic that cooler temperatures and increased humidity will continue to improve conditions.
Needed Rain and Snowfall Across the Region
Beyond Los Angeles, much of Southern California received beneficial rainfall, with totals including:
- 1.3 inches in Simi Valley
- 1.24 inches in Malibu
- 0.95 inches at Los Angeles International Airport
- 0.82 inches in Burbank
- 0.62 inches in downtown San Diego
Additionally, mountain regions saw 5 to 10 inches of snow, with some areas in the Sierra Nevada accumulating nearly a foot of snowfall. This winter storm system provided relief to a region experiencing severe drought conditions.
