OROVILLE, California – A search operation is underway for two teen brothers missing in a kayak accident in Northern California. The brothers, 17-year-old Wesley Cornett and 19-year-old Andruw Cornett were reported missing after one of their kayaks overturned at the Thermalito Afterbay near Oroville.
Details of the Incident
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports that one of the brothers’ kayaks had capsized. The other brother reportedly jumped into the water to help but never resurfaced. Despite extensive search efforts, both remain missing.
Authorities initially launched a rescue mission, but by Tuesday, the operation had transitioned into a recovery effort.
Search Efforts
The recovery mission involves multiple law enforcement agencies from across Northern California. Several boats equipped with sonar technology scan the Afterbay for anomalies, which are further inspected using underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and divers.
“We are running a lot of sonar equipment trying to narrow down anomalies that we can further inspect with underwater ROVs as well as divers,” said Sgt. Brian Evans of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit.
The sheriff’s office clarified that it is not requesting assistance from the public at this time, emphasizing the specialized nature of the search.
A Community in Mourning
The transition to a recovery effort signals the grim reality of the situation. As search operations continue, the community is rallying around the Cornett family, offering support during this difficult time.
The Thermalito Afterbay, a popular location for outdoor recreation, has seen similar tragedies in the past, underscoring the inherent risks of water-based activities. Authorities continue to urge caution and adherence to safety protocols during such activities.
