Irwindale, CA β June 20, 2026 | Ayuda California News
A woman was killed and 32 people were injured, including several children, following a big rig crash on the 210 Freeway Saturday morning in Irwindale, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The multi-vehicle collision was reported shortly before 9:00 a.m., just west of Irwindale Avenue.
What Happened
According to CHP’s preliminary investigation:
- A big rig was traveling eastbound on the 210 Freeway.
- For reasons still under investigation, the truck lost control, jackknifed, and crossed the center median.
- It then struck at least one westbound vehicle, triggering a multi-vehicle collision.
As a result of the crash:
- One woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
- Ten people were transported to local hospitals.
- Two victims suffered critical injuries.
- Eight people sustained minor injuries.
- Six of the hospitalized patients were children.
- Another 22 people were treated for minor injuries and declined transportation to a hospital.
Authorities said at least three vehicles were involved, although the total number remains under investigation.
What Is a Jackknife Accident?
A jackknife accident occurs when a tractor-trailer’s trailer swings toward the cab, forming an angle similar to a folding knife.
These crashes can result from:
- Emergency braking
- Loss of traction
- Speed too fast for roadway conditions
- Mechanical failures
- Sudden evasive maneuvers to avoid an obstacle
Because of a commercial truck’s size and weight, a jackknifed big rig can cross into opposing lanes and cause devastating multi-vehicle collisions.
Legal Considerations: What Are Authorities Investigating?
Crashes involving commercial trucks typically require far more extensive technical investigations than collisions involving passenger vehicles.
Investigators may examine:
Federal Commercial Trucking Regulations
Commercial drivers and trucking companies must comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, including requirements related to:
- Maximum driving hours and mandatory rest periods
- Driver training and licensing
- Safety inspections
- Preventive vehicle maintenance
Technical Evidence
The investigation may also include:
- The truck’s speed
- Braking distance
- Electronic Control Module (ECM) data
- Brake and tire conditions
- Onboard camera footage and physical evidence from the crash scene
At this time, CHP has not determined the official cause of the collision.
Rights of Victims and Their Families
People injured in a commercial truck crash may have the right to seek compensation for their losses, particularly if the investigation identifies negligence.
Depending on the circumstances, compensation may include:
- Current and future medical expenses
- Physical and neurological rehabilitation
- Lost wages and diminished earning capacity
- Pain, suffering, and permanent impairments
When a fatality occurs, eligible surviving family members may pursue a wrongful death claim under California Code of Civil Procedure §§ 377.60β377.61, which may include compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and loss of companionship.
If the investigation determines the crash resulted from poor maintenance, violations of federal safety regulations, or inadequate driver supervision, the trucking company may also be held civilly liable.
